Description | Deep Fission, a Berkeley-based start-up, is developing mile-deep small modular pressurized-water reactors (SMRs) installed underground in Utah. The project leverages underground PWR technology to reduce costs, enhance safety, and address rising global uranium demand. The reactor components and low-enriched uranium are placed in a large-diameter borehole a mile below the surface, with heat transferred to surface turbines. The project aims to confirm its first site in 2025, submit a licensing application in 2026, obtain construction and operation approval by 2028, and target commercial operation in Fall 2029. |
