The undersea cabling infrastructure connecting continents is receiving increased investments totaling $13 billion over the next two years, driven primarily by big tech companies such as Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Projects include Amazon's Fastnet cable from Maryland to Ireland, Meta's Project Waterworth spanning 31,000 miles, the 2Africa project wiring Africa and parts of Europe with 28,000 miles of cables, Google's Sol cable connecting Florida, Bermuda, the Azores, and Spain, and Microsoft's undersea cables uniting Ireland and the UK. The industry is also addressing the challenge of cable cuts, which can disrupt internet connectivity for entire nations, with efforts to reduce repair times and improve cooperation among countries.
