The civil war in Syria, which has been going on for four years, has caused massive refugee movements to neighboring countries. The regional project supports basic infrastructure projects in the neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt to accommodate the refugees. Iraq is home to around 250,000 Syrian refugees. Since 2014, armed conflicts with Islamist groups, in particular the so-called Islamic State (IS), have driven over three million people from their home regions. Large areas have now been recaptured. The aim of the FC measure is to contribute to stabilizing Iraq and improving livelihoods in the liberated areas as a prerequisite for the return of internally displaced persons. Reconstruction measures for the destroyed basic infrastructure in the liberated areas are also intended to create employment opportunities in the host communities. Small businesses receive investment grants to restart business activities. The individual activities are implemented by UNDP (United Nations Development Program) in cooperation with local structures. The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group includes the local population, returnees and internally displaced persons in the host communities. The FC co-financing of EUR 5.0 million will be implemented within 12 months by the end of 2016.
