Description

Description

The aim of the project is to contribute to the stabilization of Iraq in areas destroyed by Islamist groups by supporting internally displaced persons and the host communities, and preparing the return of internally displaced persons by expanding and rebuilding basic infrastructure and providing employment opportunities. To this end, the German side is providing a financial contribution of up to EUR 40 million to UNDP. In close cooperation with the national and regional authorities, UNDP has been implementing the Iraq Crisis Response and Resilience Programme (ICRRP) in Iraq since 2014. This initially supported municipalities with high numbers of refugees in the north of the country and has now been expanded to include central Iraq and areas liberated from the so-called Islamic State. Since 2015, the Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization (FFIS) has been supporting municipalities liberated from IS occupation (liberated areas) by quickly rehabilitating basic infrastructure and restarting the local economy. The target group includes refugees, returnees and the resident population. Over a project period of four years (2016-19), the project is expected to benefit at least 500,000 people. The individual activities will be further specified during the course of implementation and adapted depending on further political/military developments.
