UNICEF - Support for internally displaced persons

According to estimates, more than 4 million Yemenis have now become internally displaced persons due to the ongoing armed conflict in Yemen. At the same time, the vulnerable population in the host communities is growing. The state structures, weakened by the chaos of war, are overwhelmed and cannot ensure an adequate supply of basic social services to the internally displaced persons and the host communities. The aim of the second phase of the FC measure is to improve access to basic services in the areas of drinking water, sanitation and education in areas with a particularly high influx of internally displaced persons and returnees (module objective). The project is thus intended to contribute to alleviating hardship and strengthening the resilience of internally displaced persons, returnees and host communities. The improvement of drinking water and sanitation supplies as well as accompanying hygiene awareness measures are intended to prevent the further spread of cholera in the project areas. The project focuses on two areas that are essential for the internally displaced persons: 1) drinking water and sanitation and 2) education. In addition to renovation measures, it also includes the procurement of equipment and the development of local capacities for operation and maintenance. The measures are being implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The FC funding contribution amounts to EUR 20 million from the BMZ Special Initiative Refugees and Host Countries (SI GA).
