Description
Description | The development opportunities of Iraqi children and young people are severely limited. The legacy of decades of tensions and the IS conflict from 2013 to 2017, the increased economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing instability of governance and food insecurity as a result of increased food prices caused by the Russia-Ukraine war are exacerbating the humanitarian situation in Iraq. These challenges are expressed in the inadequate provision of basic services, which are particularly difficult for vulnerable population groups to access. These basic services include safe and climate-resilient drinking water and sanitation, high-quality and equitable educational institutions, child protection systems in the psychosocial and judicial areas, and social security and inclusion systems. The aim of the project is therefore to sustainably improve access to and the quality of basic services in the areas of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), education, child protection, social security and inclusion. Building on the preliminary phases, additional measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate the consequences of the pandemic are being promoted. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is both the recipient and the project sponsor of the project. The FC contribution will finance part of the UNICEF Iraq Country Program (2020-2024). The target group includes the predominantly vulnerable population living permanently or temporarily at the various project locations. This includes returnees, Iraqis in need of protection, internally displaced persons and Syrian refugees inside and outside camps as well as in host communities. Children and young people from families affected by poverty and marginalized groups will receive increased support. |
