Description
Description | The planned funding will serve to continue German support for the No Lost Generation initiative and the UNICEF Education and Social Protection Program in Jordan. The aim of the project is to improve access to education and child protection measures for needy children and young people and to support disadvantaged young people in being able to pursue paid employment. Jordan's economic situation has worsened as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. The unemployment rate rose sharply in the first quarter of 2021, especially among young people. Vulnerable Jordanians and the still high number of refugees in Jordan are particularly hard hit by the economic and social consequences of the pandemic. Despite massive efforts, the Jordanian education system remains overloaded. In order to strengthen children's rights, reduce learning deficits among vulnerable Jordanian and refugee children and young people, and strengthen social skills, UNICEF established so-called Makani centers across the country, some of which are run by local non-governmental organizations. With a contribution of EUR 10 million, the project supports the full financing of 32 of these centers for a period of 12 months (15 in refugee camps, 17 in host communities) as well as Makani services in 25 informal tent settlements. In addition, there are measures to make it easier for vulnerable young people to enter working life (certified IT courses and vocational preparation courses). The target group includes around 32,000 needy children and young people living in Jordan (around 50% refugees and 50% girls or women). In addition, measures are to be implemented to strengthen the sustainability of the Makani centers. The project is being implemented by UNICEF Jordan. The responsible Jordanian Ministry of Social Development is to be further strengthened to take more responsibility for the Makani approach. |
