Description

Description

The planned funding will serve to continue German support for the No Lost Generation initiative and the UNICEF Education and Social Protection Program in Jordan. The aim of the project is to strengthen the resilience and social cohesion of vulnerable Jordanian and refugee children and young people by improving their educational opportunities, social skills and psychosocial health in the long term. Jordan's economic situation has further deteriorated as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Added to this are the global economic consequences of the war in Ukraine. The unemployment rate rose sharply in the first quarter of 2023, especially among young people. Vulnerable Jordanians and the still high number of refugees in Jordan are particularly hard hit by the economic and social consequences of the pandemic. Despite massive efforts, the Jordanian education system remains overloaded. In order to strengthen children's rights, reduce learning deficits among vulnerable Jordanian and refugee children and young people, and strengthen social skills, UNICEF established so-called Makani centers across the country, some of which are run by local non-governmental organizations. With a contribution of 10 million euros, the project supports the financing of a total of 136 Makani centers for a period of 12 months in refugee camps, in host communities, and Makani services in informal tent settlements. The target group includes around 30,625 needy children and young people living in Jordan (around 50% refugees and 50% girls or women). In addition, measures are to be implemented to strengthen the sustainability of the Makani centers. The project is being implemented by UNICEF Jordan. A transition phase for the transfer of the Makani approach to the Jordanian Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) is being prepared.
