Description
Description | The aim of the FC measure is to sustainably improve water supply and sewage disposal in the Jordanian refugee camp Zaatari for up to 100,000 people (capacity design; there are currently around 80,150 people in the camp). The project enables a reliable, equitable and conflict-free supply of perfect drinking water as well as the hygienic disposal of sewage, which reduces the risk of disease transmission and odor pollution. The project is therefore of great importance for the living conditions of the people in the camp and for Jordan as a whole. Zaatari lies on one of the most important groundwater aquifers in the country, which is protected by regulated sewage disposal in the camp. The collected sewage is adequately cleaned in the sewage treatment plant in the Zaatari refugee camp. The farmers in the surrounding area also benefit from the partial use of the treated sewage for irrigation purposes. The FC contribution for the third phase presented here amounting to EUR 9.96 million follows directly on from the two previous phases (Stabilization of Neighboring Countries in the Syria Crisis III, BMZ No. 201468297 (FZ EUR 15 million) and Strengthening the Resilience of UNICEF Jordan Water/Wastewater Zaatari, BMZ No. 201568906 (FZ EUR 10 million)) and helps cover the total costs of EUR 51 million for water and wastewater systems. The measures started in the previous phases will be completed so that after completion of this phase, piped systems will be available in both the water supply and wastewater disposal areas. In the area of water supply, the measures include in particular the expansion of the pipe network, small-scale pressure boosting systems in the network, and measuring and control devices. In the area of wastewater disposal, the measures include in particular sewer networks, two main pumping stations, the connection to the refugee camp's existing sewage treatment plant, and measuring and control devices. The project sponsor will again be the UN Children's Fund UNICEF, which will implement and monitor the measures with the support of an international consultant and in close coordination with the Jordanian Ministry of Water and the water authorities Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and Yarmouk Water Company. |
