Description

Description

Lebanon's public water sector was already in a desolate state before the influx of Syrian refugees into the vulnerable host communities. The infrastructure was and still is in urgent need of rehabilitation and expansion in many communities. Water reservoirs and networks as well as sewage pipes are still missing in some cases, or they require rehabilitation in order to adequately meet the increased demands caused by the refugee crisis. At the same time, there is a lack of employment opportunities for needy Lebanese and non-Lebanese in Lebanon, particularly as a result of the ongoing severe economic and financial crisis and the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbates social tensions between Lebanese themselves and between them and the refugee population. The aim of the project is to improve health and living conditions and to create positive employment and income effects for vulnerable Lebanese and non-Lebanese population groups. This is to be achieved through the labor-intensive implementation of construction measures to improve the drinking water and sewage infrastructure in the sense of the Just Transition. This also includes the installation of photovoltaic systems in the drinking water supply. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), as KfW's implementation partner, is implementing measures throughout Lebanon. This includes the labor-intensive construction of spring catchments, drinking water reservoirs and sewage systems. This enables vulnerable Lebanese and refugees as a target group to benefit from improved water and sewage infrastructure as well as short-term employment opportunities.
