Description | The United Downs facility near Redruth in Cornwall is a commercial-scale geothermal energy and lithium extraction project. It produces zero-carbon lithium and geothermal electricity from the same underground brine resource within a fully closed-loop system. The project uses Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to selectively extract lithium from geothermal brine. The facility commenced commercial-scale lithium production at approximately 100 tonnes per annum (tpa) of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) in early 2026, with plans to scale up to 1,000 tpa by late 2026 and a national multi-site ambition of 12,000 to 18,000 tpa by 2030. |
