University of Michigan $1.2 Billion National AI Supercomputing Research Center

The University of Michigan, in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory, plans to build a $1.2 billion artificial-intelligence-focused supercomputing facility in Ypsilanti Township, southeast of Ann Arbor. The project aims to support important research in science, energy, and national security, create 200 high-paying jobs, and open by 2030. The facility will operate as a public research center with all-electric infrastructure and minimal emissions, purchasing cooling water from local municipal utilities and handling sanitary discharge through the municipal system. The project footprint has expanded to 100 acres, and there is ongoing discussion about relocating the site to the American Center for Mobility property.
