Description

Description

New Brunswick’s provincial courthouse, the “Justice Building”, was built in 1929 and renovated in 1972. Since that time, the facility has remained largely unchanged with the exception of small renovations. As a new courthouse is currently being constructed with an opening date of spring 2025, this proposed project will see the existing Justice Building become home to the University of New Brunswick’s Faculty of Law, rehabilitating one of Fredericton’s most historic buildings, and turning it into a site that provides education and services to the public, and is adapted for climate change. The scope of the project includes: • new ventilation systems; • reconfiguration of spaces for public and academic use; • enhanced accessibility; • a new atrium space that can be booked for public events; • new lighting, occupancy sensors, emergency power, and new communication systems; and, • updates to the entire building using 2015 National Building Code standards. The upgrades and approach will focus on sustainability, LEED, and GHG reduction designs. It is anticipated that the upgraded building will result in approximately a 30% reduction on GHG emissions. Additionally, the project will increase structural capacity to address flooding, including a new pump station and upgraded foundation and structural framing. The project will preserve the historic nature of the building while providing quality space for the public and University students and staff.
