The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is establishing a Faculty of Medicine to house a joint Doctor of Medicine degree in partnership with the Memorial University of Newfoundland. This new green facility will house the Faculty of Medicine and accommodate the expanded UPEI Health and Wellness Centre offerings, as well as a UPEI Psychology Training Clinic, having an approximate footprint of 133,000 square feet over 5 levels, plus clinical space to provide service to over 10,000 patients per year. Furthermore, the new facility will contain: simulation and clinical learning centre space used by the broader community for training purposes (i.e., first responders, Red Cross, etc.), pre-clerkship space, academic anatomy learning space, dedicated student space, faculty and administration space, learning well-being and success space, medical clinic space, psychology and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) clinic space. The work to be completed for this build will consist of: the building envelope, all electrical, communications, and building services infrastructure associated with the building, interior fit-up, windows and doors, elevator install, and associated integrated parts. In addition to providing clinical opportunities for medical students, the Clinic will be a model for primary care delivery with the aim of improving community access and providing service to 10,000+ patients yearly. This improved access will help to reduce the waitlist for family doctors dramatically and relieve pressure on Island walk-in clinics, emergency rooms, outpatient departments, and physicians.
