A test well drilled with a grant showed potential for significant energy savings and reduced maintenance needs. The geothermal system is expected to reduce energy use by up to 60% for heating and 50% for cooling, with a payback period of five to ten years. The new Ocean Frontiers Building will replace the 55-year-old Horn Laboratory and is expected to open in fall 2028. The geothermal system design could also support other nearby research facilities in the future. |
