For more than 10 years now, the special landscape around the Nagelfluhkette bears the title “Nature Park”. It is characterised by the protection and beauty of the natural and cultural landscape of this region. Being a nature park implies the task of dealing responsibly with the values of this unique natural and cultural landscape. Being a nature park means working together with the people who shape the cultural landscape and bringing it closer to their homeland. Being a nature park means having intact nature, which is often used by athletes and recreation seekers. Being a nature park brings with it to face the challenges arising from these tasks. In the last ten years, many projects have been implemented in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park that have faced these challenges. In particular, the topics of visitor guidance and environmental education crystallised as transnational fields of action in order to fulfil the tasks that the “Nature Park” predicate entails. With the INTERREG V — ABH project “Discovering natural values — creating livable living”, effective concepts have already been developed and measures implemented in both areas. Specifically, in the field of environmental education, the concept “”Naturpark Nagelfluhkette macht Schule“” and the campaign “”Your Freiraum“” could be used in the field of environmental education. My habitat is being established, which are now considered modelling across borders. Despite these successfully implemented projects, the “Naturpark” award is always confronted with new challenges. A particularly urgent problem lies in the constant intensification, especially in land use, sports behaviour as well as the experience of nature and thus an increase in visitor pressure. In the project “”Naturpark 2.0“” aims to raise awareness of the dangers of continuous intensification. The aim of the project is to highlight the importance of the special natural and cultural landscape of the nature park on both sides of the border by intensifying awareness-raising activities in the areas of visitor guidance and environmental education. The planned measures differ according to the following topics: (1) Thematic field of environmental education: The concept “Naturpark Nagelfluhkette macht Schule” has so far been transferred to eight elementary or elementary schools in the nature park, so that four nature park schools on Vorarlberg and four nature park schools on the Allgäu side currently exist. In the planned project, the schools will be networked more closely and permanently in order to reflect together on the common natural and cultural region and to convey its value. The aim is to create a coherent community in which school members (school leaders, teachers and pupils) exchange intensively across borders and carry out joint actions. This removes thought-provoked boundaries, creates new local knowledge and makes the common natural and cultural space more tangible for those involved. (2) Thematic field of visitor management: In recent years, new transnational challenges have been identified in visitor guidance, including the increasing intensification. From many sides, a cross-border, binding spatial concept is seen as a way of solving these challenges. The project aims to lay the foundations (e.g. identifying national legal frameworks) for this spatial concept in cooperation with all actors. The areas of application and operational competences of the rangers now established on both sides of the border should be harmonised and the possibilities and tools for cross-border visitor guidance in the digital space (e.g. on tour portals) should be developed and applied in a pilot manner.
