Description

Description

UNOPS has committed to help support the Mayan Train project, a new 1,500 kilometre intercity railway in south-eastern Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Working together with the National Fund for Tourism Development, UN-Habitat, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNOPS will provide technical assistance to help improve compliance with international standards in project management, tendering processes, and design and construction of railway infrastructure. In support of the Government of Mexico, UNOPS will work to promote sustainable urban development and improve local public resource management. Mexico’s south-eastern states of Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo have yet to experience the same levels of economic development as their central and northern Mexican neighbours. With an opening date currently programmed for 2023, the aim of the new Mayan Train is to stimulate the region’s economy, to bring jobs and tourism, while creating a better connected transport system for all the Mexican citizens. During the first phase of the project, UNOPS will be providing assistance in the preliminary and design studies, advising on the tendering process for the acquisition of trains, and advising on the formulation of the business model for the train service. UNOPS will also be supporting the bidding processes for public contracts and various aspects of the construction works during the second phase.
