Description
Description | The aim of the project is to restore municipal infrastructure and services in order to improve the living conditions of residents in the predominantly poor districts of Beirut and the municipality of Bourj Hammoud, which were destroyed by the explosion in Beirut's port on August 4, 2020. Participatory project preparation and implementation as well as targeted peace-building measures are intended to help reduce social tensions, increase the resilience of residents and the institutions supported, and strengthen trust in state actors. The project is being implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) as the project sponsor. The project comprises three components. The first component for the restoration of municipal infrastructure and services is to rehabilitate selected sections of the road network and the associated rainwater and sewage networks; public squares and public buildings in conjunction with renewable energy generation (rooftop photovoltaic systems). The second component is to strengthen the capacity of municipal staff and other project partners. The third component is intended to promote targeted peace-building measures by local non-governmental organisations, which submit proposals to the project sponsor in a competitive process. |
