Description | Information IIT Madras has an existing sewerage system as well as a new Sewage treatment plant with 4MLD capacity. Most components of the existing sewerage system are already 50 years old and that there were reports of blockages in the network and also that feeding of continuous sewage to the existing new STP system need to be critically looked at. The objective of the up-gradation of sewerage system at IITM therefore was to arrive at methods that convey the sewage to the treatment plant without surcharging and to get sewage treatment plant function in such a manner that the treated sewage will not only conform to the standards stipulated for discharge but will also offer possibilities of reuse resulting in an ideal situation of zero discharge from the campus.
