Description

Description

The project addresses the upgrade of the SKA (Acharnes railway center) - Oinoi railway section, which is located on the Orient/East-Mediterranean Corridor of the TEN-T core network. It covers the upgrade of 51.35 km of existing double-track railway line, the rail infrastructure works at the Oinoi and Aliartos railway stations, and the construction of the new Oinofyta railway stop. The project is divided into four work packages, comprising project management, land expropriation, utility network relocations and protection, as well as construction works and their certification. The overall objectives of the project are: - to remove a major bottleneck along the main Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki rail axis - to ensure the required interoperability and technical parameters (i.e. 22.5 t axle load, 740 m train length and UIC GC spatial clearance) - to remove existing speed restrictions and increase the operating speed up to 120 km/h - to enhance the safety of railway transport and passengers - to ensure accessibility of railway transport for persons with reduced mobility The implementation of the project will result in increased capacity of the railway line. This will lead to increased transport volumes and reduced transportation costs, thus generating positive socio-economic benefits for the region and the Member State.
