Upgrading of existing railway infrastructure between Villa Opicina station and Sezana station

The Action is located on the cross-border railway section Trieste-Divača, a part of the Rail Freight Corridor and of two core TEN-T Corridors, namely the Mediterranean and the Baltic – Adriatic. It is part of the global project aiming at assuring interoperability, sufficient infrastructure capacity, removal of bottlenecks and shift to rail at this TEN-T section between Italy and Slovenia. Through an Intergovernmental Commission, Italy and Slovenia have established that the enhancement of the railway infrastructure in this section shall be achieved by upgrading of the existing infrastructure, instead of construction of a new railway line which can be postponed to a medium-long term scenario. The Action encompasses three work packages, namely upgrading of Villa Opicina railway station (WP1), elaboration of Executive Design for upgrading of Sežana railway station and railway section between Sežana and state-border with Italy (WP2) and Coordination (WP3). With execution of the project, the following objectives will be met: • The upgraded railway station Villa Opicina will correspond to interoperability and TSI standards on TEN-T core network; • The bottleneck on this railway line will be removed and operations in the Villa Opicina station will be more efficient; • The main outcome of the WP2 will be the completed executive design documentation which will allow commencement of construction works under the next phase of the Global Project. The action, through the Global Project, will contribute to improved technical parameters of the railway line b.c. IT/SI-Sežana, notably with higher speeds, possibility of running 740 m long trains for freight transport, and achievement of interoperability standards as required by regulations on TSI. The Action will be implemented in partnership of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, Ministrstvo za Infrastrukturo and GEIE FERROVIA TRIESTE-DIVAČA (department EEIG Railway Trieste-Divača).
