Economic/Social Impact of the Project The Upper Tunga Irrigation Project envisages construction of a dam across river Tunga at 100m. downstream of the existing Tunga anicut near Gajanur in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. Shivamogga is also known as Shimoga. River Tunga is major tributary of river Tungabhadra which in turn is a major tributary of River Krishna. A Left Bank canal with a Head discharge capacity of 50.83 m3/s aims to provide irrigation to a irrigable area of 80,494 ha [CCA 94698 ha] for Khariff Semi dry crops including 800 ha of Khariff paddy in the initial reaches in Shimoga Taluka utilizing 12.24 TMC of water which is in addition to the utilization of 11.50 TMC under the existing Tunga anicut. The project also benefits Davanagere and Haveri which are known as drought prone districts
