Description

Description

This development loan is intended to finance a bilateral water protection project in Baofeng County in the Chinese province of Henan. The project essentially involves financing the construction of two modern sewage treatment plants in the cities of Daying and Zhangbaqiao as well as the sewage systems at both locations. The aim of the FC project is to improve environmental protection (in particular water quality) in the river systems and to adapt to climate change. In addition to the construction of the sewage treatment plants, the project also includes the construction of new sewage systems, storm overflow basins and retention soil filter basins for rainwater drainage. This will further improve drainage performance and reduce the frequency of flooding at both project locations. The project thus also makes a contribution to adapting to climate change, which is expected to further increase the already increasing flooding and heavy rainfall events in the region in the medium term. The project thus supports the global sustainability goals, in particular SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Combating Climate Change and its Impacts). It is also in line with China's Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), which declare water as a resource worthy of protection with a view to implementing the Paris Climate Agreement.
