The inadequate supply of hygienic drinking water and sanitation facilities to the population is a major hindrance to the social and economic development of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The FC measure is an open program and in the first two phases it finances the restoration of the drinking water supply in up to 13 secondary cities in 3 regions as part of the Urban Water Supply Secondary Cities program. In the third phase (and following), construction work will be prepared in six additional secondary cities in the Kasaï and Bandundu regions and further construction work in Kikwit. The aim of the project is to provide the target group with a sustainable supply of hygienic drinking water and appropriate basic sanitation facilities. This is intended to make an indirect contribution to improving the health situation of the target group. The direct target group is the urban population of the supported program cities. The individual measures include immediate measures to restore a regular drinking water supply, start-up funding for the operational phase, the repair or new construction of the water supply systems, and the construction of basic public sanitation facilities. The accompanying measure will place particular emphasis on technical support in the secondary centres and will strengthen the autonomous operational responsibility of the secondary centres based on service contracts.
