US 59 in El Campo serves as a route for local traffic within El Campo and also serves motorists traveling statewide along US 59. The future I-69 Texas route includes US 59 through El Campo. As traffic increases on US 59 in El Campo, the need for an interstate-quality road becomes more important. An interstate-quality road would include frontage roads and control access to the high-speed main travel lanes using entrance and exit ramps. An interstate-quality road would better accommodate growing traffic volumes as well as enhance safety along US 59. TxDOT is studying US 59 in El Campo on the improvements needed to bring US 59 up to interstate standards. TxDOT is currently conducting two environmental studies, called Environmental Assessments, or EAs. These EAs will include citizen comments and participation and will ultimately provide a road map for improving US 59 to interstate standards. The proposed project includes mainlanes, frontage roads, and sidewalks.
