Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is leading a major overhaul of the United States' air traffic control system to replace outdated radar, telecom lines, and paper note systems with new technology including artificial intelligence. The project involves installing 27,000 new radios, upgrading hundreds of radars, replacing copper wire with high-speed fiber, and digitizing flight strips. The Federal Aviation Administration is working with AI vendors to test software to ease congestion and spot traffic conflicts earlier. The project requires 10 million hours of labor across 4,600 sites nationwide and is expected to be completed by 2028.
