US Generating Capacity Expansion for Data Centers
Sector: Energy Storage • Location: United States
Source: Utility Dive
Bank of America analysts project that the United States will need more than 230 GW of new generating capacity over the next five years, driven largely by data center demand. However, regulated utilities are expected to add only about 93 GW of accredited supply, leaving a gap of more than 100 GW. Data centers could add roughly 125 GW of electric load, pushing electricity demand growth to a 4.1% com

Description
Description | Bank of America analysts project that the United States will need more than 230 GW of new generating capacity over the next five years, driven largely by data center demand. However, regulated utilities are expected to add only about 93 GW of accredited supply, leaving a gap of more than 100 GW. Data centers could add roughly 125 GW of electric load, pushing electricity demand growth to a 4.1% compound annual growth rate from 2026 through 2030. To meet this demand, data center developers are turning to on-site gas engines, utilities are extending coal plant operations, deploying batteries, and pursuing transmission upgrades. |
