US Offshore Wind Lease Buyouts

The Trump administration is attempting to buy out all remaining offshore wind leases in the US by offering companies buyouts in exchange for investments in oil and gas projects. This strategy follows a similar deal made with TotalEnergies, which agreed to receive nearly $1 billion in reimbursements and invest the funds in US oil and gas projects. However, some companies focused solely on renewables may not be able to reinvest buyout proceeds in fossil fuel projects, complicating the buyout process. There are currently 43 active offshore wind leases off the US coast, including significant leases held by companies such as EDP, Engie, Invenergy, energyRe, and RWE. Some projects, like Equinor's Empire Wind, are already significantly developed and may not be easily bought out.
