Description | U.S. Steel is investing $1.9 billion to build a modern and lower-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) plant at Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Arkansas. The plant will use natural gas to produce iron with about half the CO2 emissions of traditional coal-based blast furnaces and will be the first in the U.S. to hot charge iron directly into electric arc furnaces on site, increasing efficiency and reducing electricity needs. Construction is expected to take 30 months with startup planned for the first half of 2029. |
