A Wood Mackenzie study reveals that U.S. utilities have committed or are constructing 116 GW of large load capacity, equivalent to 15.5% of the current national peak electricity demand. Including projects under advanced discussion, the total reaches 147 GW or 20% of peak demand. Much of this capacity is expected to come online within this decade, with about 60 GW projected to be added by 2030 and 93 GW operational by 2035. The study highlights a shift in project locations, with most current construction in regulated markets, but a growing presence in deregulated markets, especially ERCOT and PJM, which carries risks of supply shortfalls and price increases. The report also notes pipeline certainty is declining due to data center projects and other factors.
