Description
Description | The UvA Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence aims to strengthen the visibility of European Union studies within the University of Amsterdam; to stimulate excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching and reflection on the EU; and to reach out to, and stimulate debate with local and national communities and practitioners. The increasingly close, complex, and contested interdependencies between the Netherlands, Europe, and the wider world demand a long-term collaborative investment in the capacity to analyse and respond to the epochal challenges they pose for all concerned. The Centre will build on the activities of the UvA Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (2014-2017; and 2018-2022) and be embedded in the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies at Amsterdam University (ACES), an established university-wide, inter-faculty centre for research, education, and public debate on the EU and its member states, which has also been designated a Research Priority Area at both university wide level and of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. This high-profile initiative promotes interdisciplinary synergies between outstanding researchers from Law, Humanities, Economics, and the Social Sciences, thereby leveraging Amsterdam’s assets as a European capital and centre of excellence in the study of contemporary Europe, the European Union and its member states. ACES will train up-and-coming academic professional through dedicated Summer Schools, function as a forum for dialogue and exchange on urgent questions concerning the dynamics and direction of Europe between academic researchers and a wide range of public and private stakeholders—local, national, governmental, civic society and international—through public lectures, workshops and conferences, and will provide in-depth knowledge on current European topics to professionals, and will reach out to school pupils to give them a first taste of what Europe and the European Union is about. |
