V C Summer Nuclear Reactor Project Restart

Brookfield Asset Management and The Nuclear Company have formed a joint venture to potentially restart the abandoned V C Summer nuclear reactor project in Jenkinsville, South Carolina. The project involves completing two partially built 1,150 MW AP1000 reactors. The joint venture aims to provide a final investment decision package by 2028 and may develop additional AP1000 reactors in the U.S. subject to utility interest and funding. The project requires new NRC construction and operating licenses and faces challenges including re-certification of equipment and concrete, some of which has been exposed to the elements for years. The project was previously halted in 2017 due to cost overruns and bankruptcy of the original contractor.
