Description
Description | The aim of the project is to reduce child mortality and morbidity in Ethiopia by financing vaccination campaigns. The contribution is being made through a bilateral grant of EUR 10 million to the vaccination programme of the global vaccination alliance (Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance) for Ethiopia. This is to finance vaccines for routine vaccinations for children up to the age of 5 who are not adequately vaccinated, as severe respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases are still among the main causes of death among children in Ethiopia and can be prevented by vaccination. The programme therefore contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of strengthening and improving the health and well-being of the population. The project is being implemented through the Ethiopian Expanded Programmes of Immunization. The vaccines are being provided through the procurement mechanisms of Gavi and UNICEF. The funds are part of Germany's pledge of EUR 600 million for this period made by Chancellor Angela Merkel in January 2015. |
