Vaccination programme support in cooperation with GAVI (bilat. contribution)

The FC project aims to promote the national vaccination programme (Expanded Programme on Immunization, EPI) and to strengthen the health system in Pakistan. The project is being carried out in close cooperation with the multilateral organisation Gavi Alliance (Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization). It is the first collaboration with Gavi in Pakistan. In addition to reducing the still high child mortality rate, the project also aims to reduce the burden of disease and to strengthen the capacity of the state health system. The project finances various vaccines against infectious diseases that are procured by UNICEF and administered to children free of charge by public health facilities in Pakistan. In addition, measures are to be financed in Pakistan as part of the Cold Chain Optimizations Platform (CCOP), which was set up as a new platform by Gavi in December 2015. A corresponding funding application to Gavi is currently being prepared by the Pakistani side with technical support from UNICEF and should be available shortly. These measures are to be supported with FC funds of EUR 20 million (including stockpile) as part of the bilateral contribution. Overall, the total cost of the Pakistani vaccination program for the period 2014-2018 amounts to around USD 2.62 billion. The secured financing currently amounts to around USD 1.3 billion and is 60% guaranteed by the Pakistani government.
