Vanterm Container Terminal Modernization and Renewable Diesel Implementation

GCT's Vanterm terminal in Vancouver's inner harbour has implemented renewable diesel to power its entire heavy-duty equipment fleet. The project includes a $160 million investment to densify and modernize the 31-hectare Vanterm terminal, increasing container-handling capacity by around 25% with additions such as new cranes and container handlers. The renewable diesel used is hydrogenation-derived renewable diesel (HDRD), sourced from Parkland Corp.'s refinery in Burnaby. The initiative started as a pilot in August 2024 and has progressively expanded to full implementation, achieving a 68% reduction in emissions in the last quarter of 2024. The project is part of GCT's plan to reduce total emissions across its two terminals by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
