Description | The Vara Mada mining project in Madagascar, formerly known as Base Toliara, aims to extract strategic minerals including ilmenite, zircon, and monazite. The project is backed by the United States and led by US company Energy Fuels. It is located in Ranobe, about 45km north of Toliara in southwestern Madagascar. The project represents an investment of about €854 million and could operate for up to 38 years. The project is awaiting approval of a formal investment agreement with the Malagasy government, which must be approved by the Constitutional High Court and Parliament before construction can begin. Construction could start as early as 2027, with production targeted between 2029 and 2030. |
