The project aims to reduce travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata from 12-14 hours to about 6-7 hours. It involves a 610-620 km corridor with a 235-km greenfield stretch in West Bengal requiring forest diversion. The project includes diversion of over 103 hectares of reserved and protected forest land and cutting of about 50,000 trees. Wildlife crossing structures are planned as per forest officer recommendations. The project has faced delays due to environmental clearance and alignment revisions, especially in West Bengal. |
