Limits: Monterey Avenue to Cook Street and 38th Avenue to Berkey Drive Length: Approximately 4.3 miles District: 4 Community: Thousand Palms The County of Riverside Transportation Department is proposing to resurface approximately 4.3 miles of Varner Road from Monterey Avenue to Cook Street and from 38th Avenue to Berkey Drive. Varner Road is classified as both a Major and Secondary Highway in the County of Riverside’s General Plan. Varner Road is a two to four lane road and currently ranges from 24-100 feet wide with dike and curb/gutter along various segments of the roadway. The proposed project will consist of three roadway treatment types. The first treatment, from Monterey Avenue to Boca Chica Trail and from 1,300 feet west of Badger Street, will be to grind down (cold plane) a portion of the roadway and place back with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). The second treatment, from Boca Chica Trail to Cook Street, will be to overlay the existing roadway with HMA. The third treatment from 38th Avenue to 1,300 feet west of Badger Street, will be to grind down (cold plane) a portion of the roadway and place back Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt (RHMA) over HMA. Additional improvements include: Reconstruction of guardrail including addition of reflective markers Reconstruction of concrete cross gutter, spandrel, driveway, and non-compliant ADA ramps Reconstruction of asphalt concrete dike Replacing existing crash cushion Placement of safety edge and shoulder backing Signal upgrades to video detection at Monterey Avenue, Cook Street, and Leopard Street Minor paved shoulder widening Utility adjustments Removal of conflicting pavement markers and reflectors Striping of roadway, including pavement markers and reflectors Salvage/removal and installation of new signs No additional right-of-way, permits to enter and construct (PEC), or temporary construction easements (TCE) will be required to construct the proposed improvements. The project improvements will not be within the existing footprint of the roadway and will raise the existing roadway profile in the overlay areas.
