Description
Description | The project involves the design and construction of a new Terminal 3 building (approximately 60,000–65,000 m²), along with a new curbside, a transportation center (transport hub of about 9,000 m² with bus stands and improved connectivity), and the comprehensive modernization and refurbishment of the existing Terminal 2 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport located 5km east of the center of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. This major expansion, led by the airport’s concessionaire SOF Connect, aims to create a unified, efficient airport system with a combined capacity to serve up to 15–20 million passengers annually. It includes new boarding gates (contributing to a total of 34), enhanced passenger facilities, better integration between terminals, upgraded infrastructure, and improved road access and public transport links. Construction of Terminal 3 is scheduled to start in autumn 2026 and is targeted for completion around April 2031 as part of a broader multi-year modernization program to position Sofia Airport as a leading five-star regional hub in Europe. The 35-year concession concerns the operation and management of all buildings, facilities, and visual air navigation systems within the airport territory, which spans a little over 5km2. It also involves the construction of a third terminal, which must be completed by the tenth year of the concession. |
