Vehicle Acquisition (Phase 8)

Purchase of approximately 81 light-duty gasoline buses to replace end-of-life buses that have been identified for retirement, and to expand the current fleet to meet planned expansion service delivery. Vehicles used for the community buses will be fitted with aftermarket hybrid electric drive systems, that will contribute up to 20% savings in fuel and gas emissions. 34 vehicles will feature a wheelchair assist loading system. All vehicles will provide improved safety amenities for drivers and riders, as well as the planned capacity for technology upgrades, that will ensure vehicles are able to accommodate planned improvements in vehicle tracking, CCTV cameras, and new payment technologies. This vehicle acquisition is aligned with BC Transit’s Low-Carbon Fleet strategy to meet zero-emissions by 2040. The strategy guides transition to zero-emission vehicles, which will be phased by vehicle class, depending in part on market availability of each class of buses.
