In June 2015, the Brazilian company Odebrecht Ambiental and the Spanish company Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar) were awarded the 30-year concession contract to expand, rehabilitate, maintain and operate the existing water and sewerage infrastructure the Mexican cities of Veracruz and Medellin. Additional information on the other bidders and on the bidding criteria was not available. The 30-year contract was signed in June 2015, but the sponsors only took over the operation of the existing facilities in September 2015. Grupo Metropolitano de Agua y Saneamiento SAPI de C.V. (Grupo MAS) was set to lead the concession. Grupo MAS ownership structure was established as follows: Odebrecht - 64%; Agbar - 16%; municipality of Veracruz - 9%; municipality of Medellin - 9%; state-owned company SAS - 2%. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$ 730 million. The investments were expected to benefit around 800.000 people.
