Description

Vidullanka developed the 1.2MW Ganthuna and 0.56MW Sheen small hydropower plants, in Ganthuna-Aranayake, Kegale District (Ganthuna) and Nuwera Eliya (Sheen). The third plant was the 2.0MW Ethamalla small hydropower plant, Matara District in the Southern Province. Sheen consisted of 1 Penton turbine of 500kW, and 1 penton of 60kW. The project generated 2.2Gwh annually, at 46% plant load factor. The project was commissioned in October 2008. The turn-key EPC contractor was Elpitiya, a member of the Aitken Spence Group. Ganthuna consisted of 2 Pelton turbines of 600kW each. The project generated 4GWh annually, at 38% load factor. The project was commissioned in March 2010 and fed from the Gurugodaoya River. The project held a 20 year PPA with Ceylon Electricity Board. Ethamalla consisted of 3 Francis turbines, two of 800kW and 1 of 400kWh. The project generated 1.2GWh annually. Financial closure date was unknown, but estimated here at March 2010 (commissioning Ganthuna). Total cost was unknown, but conservatively ESTIMATED at US$1.7 million (@US$1.0 million/MW). Sheen and Ganthuna applied for UNFCCC CDM financing.
