JAL Trading and Tomen Corp. entered into an agreement with the Lao government to operate a new terminal at Vientiane Airport. The companies and the government formed a joint-venture company called Lao-Japan Airport Terminal Services, which will undertake the management contract for a period of 10 years. The government holds a 51% stake on this company, while JAL Trading and Tomen Corp. equally share the remaining 49% stake. The new facility has 11,973 square meters and will be able to service 800 passengers per hour. Construction works were completed in mid-1999, but operation of the terminal only started after the agreement with JAL and Tomen was signed. Initial investment capital was US$1.5 million, rising to US$3 million in 2009. The contract was extended before expiration date, but there was no information for how long. As of March 2011, the project continued to be operational.
