Description
Description | The project objective is to decommission and reclaim the Beechy Landfill, non-compliant with the best management practices for landfill construction. The Beechy Landfill has a surface area of 0.06 hectares and was permitted to only receive municipal waste during its operation. The landfill is currently in operation and will be closed prior to decommissioning activities. Environmental Site Assessment Level II and the Corrective Action Plan have been already completed; therefore, the scope of the project includes completing and implementing a Decommissioning and Reclamation plan that is acceptable to the Ministry of Environment’s Landfill Section. Decommissioning and Reclamation activities include the design and construction of the final engineered cover, stormwater management, removal of existing infrastructure, recycling, metal, concrete, clean wood piles, and reclamation activities to ensure it is in conformance with the surrounding lands and the future intended use. The landfill will be converted to a transfer station where bins will only be used. The reclaimed landfill will be owned by the Village of Beechy and the RM of Victory No 226 with the intended use of a transfer station. Decommissioning and reclamation of the proposed landfill will attenuate the generation of leachate which in turn increases the capacity to reduce soil pollutants in line with the Environmental Quality Outcomes of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the ICIP. |
