Description
Description | The project objective is to decommission and reclaim the landfill of the Village of Mistatim, non-compliant with the best management practices for landfill construction. The landfilled areas being decommissioned have a surface area of 1.45 hectares and was permitted to only receive municipal waste during its operation. The landfill is currently close and ready for decommissioning. Environmental Site Assessment Level II has been completed and the CAP is underway; therefore, the scope of the project includes completing and implementing a Decommissioning and Reclamation plan that is acceptable to the Ministry of Environment’s Landfill Section. Decommissioning and Reclamation activities include the design and construction of the final engineered cover, storm water management, removal of existing infrastructure, recycling, metals, clean wood piles, and reclamation activities to ensure it is in conformance with the surrounding lands and the future intended use. Landfill will be converted to a transfer station where bins will only be used. Reclaimed landfill will be owned by the Village of Mistatim with the intended use of a transfer station surrounding by undisturbed grassland. Decommissioning and reclamation of the landfilled areas will attenuate the generation of leachate which in turn increases the capacity to reduce soil pollutants in line with the Environmental Quality Outcomes of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the ICIP. |
