Description | The Virginia Solar Park is a 275 MWp solar photovoltaic facility located near Virginia in the Free State, South Africa. It is one of the largest projects awarded under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and is expected to supply power to around 210,000 households. The project is developed by Red Rocket South Africa in partnership with Reatile Group, financed by Rand Merchant Bank with equity participation from Jade Sky Energy and the Red Rocket Opportunity Trust. The EPC contract is held by a joint venture led by PowerChina International Group alongside Green Whistle, with technical advisory support from Arup. Despite allegations of fraud, labour violations, and BEE fronting, construction continues with commercial operation targeted for July 2026. |
