Description

Description

Vostoktelecom Company Ltd. was founded as a joint venture between Interdaltelecom of Russia and and by two Japanese companies: "Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd."(now KDD Corporation) and "Nissho Iwai Corporation" (NIC) in 1992. KDD and NIC each held a 37.5 % stake in the new firm while Russian company Interdaltelecom (IDT) held the remaining 25% stake. The contract provided for increasing the Russian share to 50% by the year 2000. Vostoktelecom network has been in operation on the territory of the Russian Far East and East Siberia since January 1993. Vostoktelecom has been licensed to provide local, regional, long distance and international telephone services over an overlay network of Vostoktelecom as well as data transmission and Telematic services. The company was expected to invest US$10m to install equipment which receives and processes signals transmitted through Intelsat space satellites. The network consisted of an earth-station of Intelsat-A type (16m antenna) in Vladivostok, with an initial capacity of 30 channels. In 1995 the capacity was extended to extended to 60 channels (IDR system linked to KDD-Japan for further transit). The network also had an international switch in Vladivostok, and local switches in Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Jakutsk, Irkoetsk, Nakhodka, and Sakhalinsk. The network configuration started in Vladivostok using fixed links rented from the Russian Federation railway operator. At each of those sites, a switch will be installed accessible for local subscribers, and will provide long distance and international traffic. The Vladivostok switch was expected to provide long distance transit and international connectivity. In compliance with the status of "dedicated network", the network operated by Vostoktelecom was not connected to the public network operated by Rossvyazyinform. As of 2005 VostokTelecom also offered wireless internet connections based radio Ethernet as well as dial-up and ADSL internet services. In January 2008, Dalsvyaz bought a 61% stake in Interdaltelecom, becoming the single owner of the company. As such Dalsvyaz owned 25% of Vostoktelecom Company Ltd. Vostoktelecom was 25% owned by Interdaltelecom, which was 100% acquired by Dalsvyaz in 2008. Dalsvyaz was then merged with Rostelecom in 2011.
