VW Group PowerCo Ontario Battery Plant

Volkswagen Group's battery unit PowerCo has started construction on a Cdn $7-billion battery cell manufacturing plant in St. Thomas, Ontario. The plant will be the third and largest in PowerCo's portfolio, following launches in Germany and Spain. The plant is expected to produce 90 GWh of battery cells per year, enough for about one million electric vehicles, and will supply batteries to VW's Scout Motors assembly plant in South Carolina and other VW Group plants in North America. Construction began with foundation work in September 2025, involving about 500,000 square feet of formwork and more than 32,000 cubic meters of concrete. The start of battery production is fixed for 2027, with employment expected to start at 1,000 staff and scale up to 3,000 as construction phases complete.
