Description

Description

The University of Rhode Island's W. Alton Jones campus in West Greenwich is undergoing a $2 million renovation to its Environmental Education Center's lodge, surrounding cabins, farm buildings, and improvements to signs and public access. The project aims to revitalize the 2,300-acre environmental camp, nature preserve, and conference center, reopening it on Labor Day after being closed since 2020 due to pandemic lockdowns and economic concerns. The renovation includes major rehabilitation of cabins, transition of cabins to offices for DEM employees, and minor maintenance at the Environmental Education Center lodge. The project will consolidate DEM's Fish and Wildlife, and Forestry and Agriculture divisions into the campus, improving working conditions and avoiding a multi-million dollar capital improvement elsewhere. The campus will also host several nonprofit organizations to encourage collaboration and expand public access and environmental education.
