The park was temporarily closed for construction of the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, which is part of New York City's Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency Project. The redesigned 3.5-acre park includes a buried floodwall for coastal flood protection, a 63,000-gallon subterranean cistern for rainwater reuse, native salt-resistant plantings, and sustainable infrastructure features to protect against storm surges and sea level rise. The project also features a new pavilion designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, with plans for phased openings including a classroom and dining venue. |
